Geneology 101
If you ever want to trace your family tree, DON’T.
I say that because what one finds out may not be what one expects. I know I am six degrees of separation from someone, but never knew exactly who. To be perfectly honest, never really cared either. But my daughter (the explorer) just had to go digging and what she unearthed should have stayed buried.
So here are the highlights of the grand exploration (mind you, this is only on my Father’s side. Researching my Mother’s side would probably cause a mild stroke at the very least):
Fact #1- My Great-Great Grandfather, Green A. Hunter B. was a wealthy landowner in Alabama. The reason he was so rich? He was a SLAVE OWNER of 21 humans. I am appalled, embarrassed and utterly ashamed. Please don’t tell me, “Oh, those were the times. Everyone did it”.
A damn slave-owner…ACH!! The bright side is he lost all of his money during the civil war, including his slaves.
Fact #2- The Slave owner had 11 children and one of them (my Great-Grandfather) married a woman who was half-Indian. Now I like my G-Grandmother Annie. She came from a line of people with such names as “Dragging Canoe”, “Small Fox Conjuror” “White Owl Raven” and “Chief Pathkiller”. Yes people, I am some-part Cherokee Indian. (This is very cool).
Fact #3- So now we need to jump across the big pond to Ireland. #5 Great-Grandfather was a Reverend (*Insert wide-eyed look here*). As much Sunday school as I skipped, quite certain he rolled in his grave.
Fact#4- The Reverend came from no-one of importance (they were in shock due to the fall from grace I think).
I’m so far back in the tree I can’t keep the Greats straight but the year is 1400’s. We were people of nobility, Countesses’ and Lords. Yes my good people, someone used to curtsey to my clan.
Fact #5-We had a black sheep in the clan. Seems one of the fair ladies had a baby out of wedlock and the poor lad was forever referred to as “Mad Robert”. (They had bullies back then I see)
So in conclusion, I have relatives that fought in wars, owned slaves, led a church, had visiting royalty stay in their homes, a mad one but not one person I found was cool. I was hoping to find a saloon owner, a pied pier, court jester anything but stiff, up-tight old folks. Thank goodness my Father was born. He broke the cycle…wide open
That’s another post though…

At least you had a Mad Robert. That ain’t half bad.
True.. he probably was the coolest of the bunch!!
Never was into the genealogy thing…too afraid I would grave robbers, vampires, and wort oil salesman…and that would only be Dad’s side…lol.
BTW…should I still bow before I read your blog?
Be encouraged.
haha.. no bowing required.. The Indians relaxed things up for us
Nobody tells their kids about the ‘cool’ people in the family; at the time they are an embarrassment and it is only generations later that we want to know about them!
You are so correct Andrew.. Well I’m breaking that chain
thanks for the visit!!
Wow…. you did (or your daughter) did some serious digging. I think that is pretty darn cool you are part Indian. Ever since reading and watching the movie ‘The Last of the Mohicans’ (which I actually JUST mentioned in my blog) I have a sweet spot for their tanned bods and long, dark hair. Sexy.
Poor Mad Robert!
Oh honey.. she dug not me..I don’t have the patience for all that digging.. as for the Indians, yes indeedy.. Hmm,maybe I should dig for some pictures.
No doubt “Mad Robert” was the cool one!
Yes he was.. and the Indians
can’t wait to read about your father………..and can you sling some more mud about Mad Robert too?
I know now I am going to research Mad Robert for sure.. and yes mam, one day I’ll post on my Dad.. he was a hoot!
well…whaddaya gonna do?
continue…
Take the good with the bad… and mad as is my case
I don’t know… seems pretty cool to me, on the whole! You can imagine where you got your wild, reflective, refined, and crazy sides. Er, moments. ~ Lily
I guess we all are really a collection of those before us..This really was very interesting to read after my daughter finished.. Now about Mad Robert, wonder what he did to be the outkast???
Neat post. I researched our family tree to find that we were (are?) originally French (no cheese eating jokes, please) way centuries ago. We got diluted with the Welsh and the English over time. I guess we’re 95% English by now. There was one French version though with the same name as me who was working at Queen Elizabeth 1st royal court. He wrote to her complaining that he was not being paid his fair dues. Ah, mon cherie….
SMM..I can see you writing to the Queen..with a dash of humor tossed in..
It really is quite fascinating to see how family lines grow and dilute through time.
French, eh? Tres’chic!!
Chic ? Moi ?
Oui!!
my family is big into geneolgy and family history. from what i know, i’m related to president polk somewhere down the line! haha. however, my dad’s dad was adopted, so i don’t know if we will ever find out what is at the end of that rabbit hole!
i’d have to say it’s pretty cool about you being part native american! maybe it’s because i enjoy all things southwest.
So you are related to a Prez.. that is very cool indeed.. My daughter started this while on break from college last summer and will not let up until she traces us back to Adam & Eve. ..lol
The being part Indian really threw me. I had no idea…maybe that’s why i tan so easily? haha!
hahaha! nice!
Gotta love my daughter, right..Dora the explorer..lol
I never knew my real father so I can’t research it, but my step-father always said I was a royal pain in the ass, so, I guess that’s something like being from a royal family. HF
Yes sir you are Lord HF from now on
I’m sorry, I have to butt in here. Harper, I believe whole heartedly that you can easily find your ancestors on your father’s side. You need scant information, just a name and an approximate date of birth or death and stuff will start popping up on ancestry.com.
I think you’ll be amazed. You, of all people, with your stories and love of history, you need to do this. You won’t regret it.
Nicely done…esp. the part about Mad Robert. You must expand on him in a future post…
Thanks..a nd for sure more on Mad Robert.. Something tells me he was not mad at all but a bit rebelish!!
Unless one of my antecedents was an incredible cook or a master luthier, I think I’m ok with my genealogical ignorance…
Did your daughter enjoy what she found?
EG, I’m with you..lived all these years not knowing nor caring but Little miss explorer just had to go digging..She will not rest until she traces us back to either Adam & Eve or an ape..:-)
Okay my darling, I have to set you straight. THIS IS SO COOL! (not the slave owner but, hey, what’s done is done.) Embrace those roots! Their DNA is your DNA. Those are your peeps and somehow, here you are, because of their struggles and experiences. Can you tell I’m passionate about this stuff?
I’m 2 years into Ancestry.com and 23andme (DNA site) and have unearthed quite a bit of amazing stuff, scary, but amazing. I’m actually addicted to those little leaves that pop up with another clue. It’s like heroin for me. Anyway, I was going to do a post on this but you beat me to it. I’ll wait a bit.
Cherokee!!! How awesome is that!
I will admit when my daughter sent me the sign on info @ Ancestry it took me a bit to figure it out, BUT then I stayed on that damn site for 4 hours..LOL..The leaves OMG they take you to documents, pics, the dirt..That’s where I read about Mad Robert..I am trying to stay away but have a feeling will be on there tomorrow just checking
Yay!! I had a funny feeling that you might have caught the bug since you knew QUITE A BIT. Yes, you do. At least 4 hours worth! haha! Seriously, it’s so addicting and the stories just keep coming. I’ve got people locked away in the Tower of London (that can’t be good), fighting the Revolutionary War, and the Civil war on both Confederate and Yankee sides, Quakers, and yeah, some cool Royalty. I sit there scratching my head, like huh? What the…?
I love it. It was only made better when I got my DNA tested and it confirmed lots of stuff. Now I have people all over the world contacting me as a third and fourth cousins, etc. It’s just bizarre to locate the family member that ties you to someone’s DNA living in Norway, etc. Crazy fun.
Not what you wanted, but there were no murderers. I hear you, though: The slave owner bit would be disconcerting. I don’t think I’ll have a look at my tree.
rest assured other than Mad Robert, the rest can stay in cyberspace. He does intrigue me though..
